There's nothing quite like lighting a brand-new candle — the first flicker, the first scent. But how long should you actually burn it? And what's all this talk about a melt pool? Here's everything you need to know to get the very best from your candle, right from the very first light.
How Long Should You Burn a Scented Candle?
As a general guide, burn your candle for one hour for every 2.5 cm (1 inch) of its diameter. So a candle 8 cm (around 3 inches) wide needs roughly 3 to 3.5 hours to do its job properly on the first burn.
That said, we'd always suggest keeping any burn session to no more than 4 hours at a time. After that, let your candle cool completely before relighting — at least two hours is ideal. This keeps the wick centred, the wax clean, and the scent throw at its best.
Why the First Burn Matters Most
Candle wax has what's called a "burn memory". The very first time you light your candle, the wax will only melt as far as it did on that first burn. Light it for too short a time, and you'll be left with a ring of unmelted wax around the edge — a frustrating thing called tunnelling — that follows the candle all the way down.
To avoid this, give your candle enough time on the first burn to form a full melt pool: a layer of liquid wax that reaches all the way to the edges of the glass or container. Once you've achieved this, your candle is set up for an even, clean burn every time.
How to Form a Full Melt Pool
- Choose your moment wisely. Only light your candle when you know you have enough uninterrupted time. Rushing the first burn is the most common mistake people make.
- Trim your wick. Before every burn, trim the wick to around 5 mm. A proper wick trimmer makes this easy and keeps your candle burning cleanly without mushrooming or excess soot.
- Light and leave it (safely). Set your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts, and let it burn until the melt pool reaches the edge of the vessel. Don't blow it out early.
- Check in, but don't fuss. You don't need to hover, but never leave a burning candle completely unattended. Check on it every so often and keep it away from children, pets, and anything flammable.
- Let it cool before the next burn. Once you do extinguish it — a candle snuffer is far gentler than blowing — allow the wax to set fully before lighting again.
Quick Burn-Time Reference
- Small candles (up to 6 cm wide): 1.5–2.5 hours for first burn
- Medium candles (7–9 cm wide): 2.5–3.5 hours for first burn
- Large candles (10 cm+ wide): 3.5–4 hours for first burn
Always check the guidance on your specific candle — our single wick scented candles include care information to help you get the most from every burn.
A Few Good Habits Worth Keeping
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before every single burn — not just the first.
- Burn in a draught-free spot so the flame stays steady and the wax melts evenly.
- Stop burning when there's around 1–1.5 cm of wax left at the bottom. Burning down to the very end can overheat the vessel.
- Keep candles out of direct sunlight to preserve the scent and prevent discolouration.
